Have you purchased oils and wondering how else you can use them? Here are 5 surprising ways to use essential oils in the home.

Use Essential Oils

We all know the wonderful medicinal uses of essential oils, but what about using essential oils around the home? Whether you want to repel pests or get a better night’s sleep, these oils can be used for a number of natural tricks around the home.

1. Ant Repellent

One of the easiest things you can do to prevent ants is to use peppermint oil. The oil can be rubbed onto areas where you see the ants entering the home, along the baseboards, etc. You can also take a cotton balled soaked with peppermint oil and place it on a washed milk lid inside your cabinet. Ants hate the scent of peppermint, but it’s an all-natural method that you won’t have to worry about using.

2. Flea and Tick Repellent

Does Fido have the tendency to get fleas? Instead of using a questionable flea medication, why not reach for an essential oil? Essential oils have a double benefit. Not only do the oils repel fleas and ticks, but your pet will smell better. One easy trick is to mix 10 – 15 drops of pet-safe essential oils (you can mix these to get your desired scent) with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil, such as vegetable oil, and place on your pet’s collar. You want to err on the side of caution and start with 10 drops of oil. Do not use the oil straight as it can irritate the pet’s skin.

A carrier oil is an oil that can be used to safely dilute essential oils. Fractionated Coconut Oil is my favorite carrier oil to use.

3. Natural Air Freshener

There are actually two ways you can use essential oils as air fresheners. Okay, there’s really a lot more than two, but these are easy. You can mix 1 to 2 drops of your favorite essential oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle to be sprayed around the room. Or, you can simply add two drops of essential oil into the inside of a toilet paper roll before placing it in the bathroom.

One thing to remember when mixing essential oils is that it’s best to use glass as the oils can break down plastic. Here are great glass options to use essential oils in the home.

4. Mold Killer

Bathroom mold can be the pits and the cleaners used to deal with it can be strong and toxic. The good news is tea tree oil can be used to kill mold and it’s all-natural. Mix a teaspoon of the oil with 1 cup water in a spray bottle and spray on the mold. That’s it. Leave the solution on the affected areas, there’s no need to wipe or wash away.

5. Fabric Freshener

Last, but not least, if you love for your sheets to smell good but hate paying the high price for fabric fresheners, mix 10 drops of lavender oil with 1 cup of bottled water. Each night before bed, spray the sheets down with the mixture and allow to dry for a few minutes. Don’t forget your pillow as well!

You can also diffuse lavender to keep the relaxing scent going through the night. If you don’t already have a diffuser, I highly recommend this one on Amazon.

Essential oils are something that everyone should have in their home. Whether you want to freshen your home or kill mold, these oils can make a big difference. Best of all, they’re all-natural.
