When we decided to add a dog to our family in 2020, we did a lot of research. We researched dog breeds that are good with kids, what we would need to raise a puppy, and so much more.
One thing I really didn’t think to research was dog food. I just assumed we would pick a conventional kibble brand and stick with it. But when Collie, our Aussiedoodle, was around 6 months old, he started to skip meals and not be interested in his food at all.
This was alarming because before that time he was extremely food motivated. That’s when I started searching for reasons why he might stop eating his food and my eyes were opened to other alternatives to traditional kibble dog food.
It turns out there are quite a few alternatives and one that I was particularly interested in was a raw dog food diet. After reading some of the benefits, I felt like it could really be a great choice for all dogs, but especially ours who was literally turning his nose up at his current food!
There are quite a few health benefits to feeding your dog a raw food diet, but here are the three that surprised me the most—let me know if they surprise you too!
Strengthened Immune System
It turns out that dogs can eat, and love to eat, human food. Now, I’m not talking hot dogs and french fries, but real, nutritious food like vegetables and fruits. Even foods like garlic are safe and a great immune booster for dogs.
It turns out Collie absolutely loves carrots, green beans, and peas. But he does often sniff out celery and blueberries and refuse to eat them. I find it hilarious that he’s just like a kid—only wants to eat what he likes!
Obviously fruits and vegetables are a great source of Vitamin C, but other foods like raw proteins and even superfoods like garlic and kelp, can help boost a dog’s natural immunity and health.
Better Dog Breath and Dental Health
TruDog actually recommends a raw dog food diet to help with better dog breath, which in turn will give your dog better dental health. And it’s true, and makes total sense! Traditional kibble gets sticky when wet so it sticks to your dog’s teeth creating plaque and tartar, which leads to yucky breath!
Less or Smaller Volume of Stools
As a younger dog, it felt like we were constantly taking Collie outside to use the bathroom. Yes, I know that’s a huge part of potty training a puppy, but he was having at least 4-5 stools a day!
One really surprising benefit of a raw food diet for dogs is less or smaller volume of stools. Why? The reason is simple—the food is exactly what a dog needs and not full of fillers and preservatives.
After reading about the great benefits of switching a dog to a raw food diet, I was ready to take the plunge. But one thing that made me hesitate was the cost. That’s when I went on a hunt for an affordable raw dog food and found TruDog.
There were a couple of standout benefits of TruDog and one of those was the raw treats for dogs. If you think dog food ingredients are interesting, check out the ingredients in dog treats! I would almost bet if you did, you probably wouldn’t buy anymore of the conventional dog treats on the market.
TruDog offers some great dog treats that are made with freeze dried meat, including organ meats with amazing health benefits. What you see is what you get!
I also love the option of a freeze-dried raw dog food. Other raw dog food diets usually consist of frozen foods, which are hard to take on the go and hard to store as well. TruDog offers a freeze-dried dog food that stores in cabinets easily and that you never have to worry about thawing or going bad, especially if you travel with your dog like we do.
If you’re looking to improve the health of your dog or like me, have started looking for dog food alternatives because your dog is simply not wanting to eat their traditional kibble, I would definitely look into switching to a raw food diet. And be sure to check out TruDog and their line-up of fantastic raw dog food options, dog supplements, and raw treats for dogs too!
