In the South we eat hot dogs all year around! These coleslaw hot dogs are one of my family’s favorites because they’re topped with the sweetest, best homemade coleslaw recipe around!
What is it about hot dogs? I feel like it’s a nostalgia thing for me. For others, I don’t know, there’s just something so tasty about this true American meal.
Hot dogs are one of my family’s favorites. I think my love of hot dogs comes from my Dad. It’s one of his favorite meals, which is why I ate quite a few hot dogs growing up. And now I’m doing the same with my girls.
But not all hot dogs are created – or cooked – the same. I always make sure I have quality dogs and our favorite way to cook them is in the air fryer!
I know, I know. A good, southern girl is supposed to love grilled more, but air fryer hot dogs are definitely my favorite now!
That doesn’t mean we don’t still love a good, grilled hot dog. But it means that we pretty much reserve grilling to the summer. It’s just super convenient – no heating up the house and it’s just more fun to cook food outside, right?!
But let’s get on to more important things, shall we? Like what hot dog toppings are the best! If you’re from the south like me, I bet one you won’t leave off the list is coleslaw!
What is coleslaw?
I didn’t realize that so many people haven’t had the amazingness of coleslaw. Turns out, it too, is a Southern thing.
Coleslaw is simply shredded cabbage with a dressing, in its simplest form. While homemade coleslaw is SO GOOD when you shred farm raised cabbage yourself, I often just opt for the bagged coleslaw in the produce section.
But what makes a delicious coleslaw recipe is… the dressing! And I have the most simple, tasty coleslaw dressing for you today that will elevate your hot dogs to the best your family has ever had!
Of course, you can always serve it as a side with any other grilled meat too – like hamburgers, chicken breasts, and it makes an excellent topping for slow cooker BBQ too!
What makes this recipe super unique is the bit of sugar that gives the coleslaw just a hint of sweetness and the vinegar, oh the sweet crisp of the added apple cider vinegar.
I used to only use regular vinegar in my coleslaw dressing, but now that I’ve tried the apple cider, I won’t be switching back anytime soon! It gives us just a little extra umph that is too good to pass up!
How to Make The Best Hot Dog Coleslaw Recipe
This coleslaw dressing recipe only has 4 ingredients, can you believe that?! It’s so simple, yet so tasty! You can find the full recipe below.
- Mix the mayo, sugar, and vinegar together. Add salt and pepper.
- Pour on top of your cabbage and mix together.
The original recipe, passed down from my Mom, was double the ingredients, but I found that after being refrigerated, the slaw was just too wet for my tastes.
If this one seems too dry for you, simply double everything.
The coleslaw is ready to eat immediately, but definitely tastes better after it’s been refrigerated for a bit of time – at least an hour, so the cabbage can soak up that sweet and tangy southern sweet coleslaw dressing you just made!
