Our Experience with Weighted Blankets for Kids

After reading the benefits of weighted blankets and seeing so many people rave about them last year, I bought one for myself last Fall. I immediately fell in love with it and have been sleeping with only my weighted blanket, no additional sheet or comforter, since.

If there’s one thing that is almost guaranteed, it’s that when Mom gets something that she likes, my girls think they should as well! I started reading about the benefits of weighted blanket for kids, and any negative experiences that I could find. The benefits definitely seemed to outweigh the other, so they were extremely thrilled when Hazli sent them each one to review.

Where to Buy Weighted Blankets for Kids

The first thing to consider when buying a weighted blanket for kids, is where to purchase. I’ve seen some blankets in big box stores, but I wasn’t super impressed by the quality or price, or the looks for that matter. Let me share with you why I do love the Hazli kids weighted blankets.

First, the colors. While it’s not the most important part of a weighted blanket, it is VERY important to kids. Hazli offers kids weighted blankets in 4 colors – pink, blue, turquoise, and violet.

The main difference in Hazli’s blankets and others I’ve seen in stores is the removable, washable cover. This makes ALL the difference, especially with a weighted blanket for kids.

The weighted insert is similar to most brands, but the minky cover is definitely the feature you want. It easily unzips and is machine washable. The insert, with the glass beads as weight, is also washable, but only by hand.

The inner blanket is made from 100% cotton, making it breathable, and is filled with hypoallergenic micro glass beads that are evenly distributed and don’t shift or make noise. You do not have to worry about the insert moving around or bunching up within the cover. It ties in, similar to duvet covers, at each corner and on each side.

Lastly, Hazli makes it easy to pick the correct weighted blanket depending on your child’s size. It’s recommended to purchase a blanket that is equal to 10% of your child’s body weight. For that reason, I chose the 7 pound blanket for both of my girls. Hazli offers their children’s blankets in 5 and 7 pounds.

How to Use Weighted Blankets for Kids

The girls keep their weighted blankets in their rooms all the time. They are almost always on their beds, but occasionally one of them will cuddle under it while they’re reading or having quiet time. The weight definitely keeps them from carrying them around the house.

If your kids sleep hot, the blankets might keep them a little too warm if they use them with additional comforters. Since we love their current bedding, we fold the blankets at the foot of their beds, then they use them by themselves at night, to keep them the perfect temperature.

Benefits of Weighted Blankets for Kids

When I asked Sophia what her favorite thing about her new blanket was, she replied “It feels like I’m wrapped in a hug!”

If you choose a weighted blanket of the correct weight, that’s exactly what it should feel like. Not too heavy, but just enough pressure evenly distributed across your body. I’ve found that Sophia, who is an extremely light sleeper, seems to get more restful sleep since having her blanket, as well.

Moreaya, on the other hand, seems to benefit from the weighted blanket when she’s actually falling asleep. She definitely exhibits some anxiety, especially at nighttime, and when I tuck her in with her weighted blanket, I feel like she’s having a better nighttime routine.

While I know that weighted blankets for kids are going to impact kids differently, if your child does have non-disruptive issues with sleeping, I think it is a great idea to try a weighted blanket before pursuing other options.

All Hazli weighted blankets are tested & compliant with Federal Children’s Product Requirements. They have also been awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner’s Seal of Approval by PTPA Media, North America’s largest volunteer parent testing community.
