For the past few weeks I have really began to work on my regular diet and the foods that I’m consuming. It’s not that I’m on a diet or looking to lose weight, but to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I know, thanks to genetics, that I need to keep my health in line as both of my parents have been diagnosed with diabetes and I likely could be to down the road.
But whether I hear that diagnosis or not, there are definitely foods that I choose for healthy snacking to help control my blood sugar and live a healthy lifestyle. While my Mom has been diagnosed, it’s important for her to control her blood sugar and food intake as well so I’ve been sharing my new favorite snacks with her too! While these are some of my favorites, it’s important for you, whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes, to work with your healthcare provider on a meal plan.
Greek Yogurt with Chia Seeds
It’s one of my current favorite afternoon snacks and one that I can’t get enough of lately! I love the crunch of the added Chia seeds and I’m loving simple, one flavor Greek yogurts like lemon! The protein helps satisfy hunger cravings and it’s just sweet enough to feel like a treat.
Fresh Pico with Avocado
One healthy fat that is great for anyone to consume daily is avocado and when it’s paired with a fresh pico de gallo, it makes a wonderful afternoon snack.
Veggie Sticks with Hummus
We all know that we should be eating more vegetables, but I used to have a very bad habit of having a “little vegetable with my Ranch dressing”. No more, but that doesn’t mean I can’t dip the carrot and celery sticks! Hummus is a great alternative that won’t spike your blood sugar.
Dark Chocolate with Berries
This is one of my favorite sweet treats – a handful of raspberries mixed with a few pieces of dark chocolate chips and you’ve got a treat that will satisfy the sweetest of cravings.
Handful of Nuts
I find that a handful of nuts can definitely satisfy because of their high quality fats, fiber, and virtually no carbs. Almonds and cashews tend to be the ones I reach for the most often.
Another option for people who are working to manage their blood sugar is Glucerna shakes. I recently picked up a pack for my Mom on my recent Walmart shopping trip.
She was looking for something that she could always have with her, these bottles are the perfect size for travel, that are carbsteady. Glucerna contains slowly digestible carbohydrates designed to help minimize blood sugar spikes.
She’ll admit that she’s the world’s worst at forgetting to eat, especially when she’s away from home running errands. Glucerna can actually make a meal replacement for those struggling with blood sugar management. It can be used as a meal replacement, or a daily snack to help manage blood sugar effectively. The delicious flavors can also help manage sugar cravings, as well as help manage hunger. To learn more, visit Glucerna.com.
Keeping your blood sugar on track can seem like a huge task, but it’s really just the result of the many choices you make, meal by meal, day by day. Start making healthy choices each day with your meals and snacks and continue to make those smart choices every day, to enjoy the victory of good health!
These are my current favorite healthy snack choices, but if you’re looking for even more snack suggestions or even meals that are great for controlling blood sugar, check out these recipes from Glucerna.
