School is just right around the corner and it’s hard for me to believe that I’ll have TWO kids in school! The hours after school are sometimes crazy and hectic in our house and I can only imagine it will be even more so with two. Between getting homework finished, to making dinner, back and forth between after school activities, and bedtime routines – that’s a lot of stuff to fit into a few hours of the day. But this year I’m going to be prepared and I’m sharing 4 easy after school hacks to save time [and your sanity].
Make a Schedule
Both of my girls thrive on a schedule. If they know exactly what is expected of them, they do it without hesitation. They know that as soon as they come home from school, they should put away their backpacks, pull out their homework and get it done first.
It’s always a great idea to have a schedule posted too. I love this after school schedule for younger kids.
After School Command Center
Do your kids know where their things should go? This is such a huge timesaver. If they know exactly where their backpack should hang, that means it won’t end up in the floor for you to pick up. If they know how to unpack their lunch box, that saves you from doing it – giving you more time to do other tasks.
It’s also a great place to have your after school schedule hanging as a visual reminder.
Snack time is obviously the most important part of the after school schedule, at least if you ask my kids. It’s the first thing I hear when they get in the car and it absolutely prompted me to have a Snack Center just for after school days.
I have a bin in the refrigerator that they can choose a snack from as well as a bowl on our kitchen table. I try to have fresh fruit and snacks that I can feel good about the kids eating in the hours before dinner.
You’ll definitely find bags of Goldfish® Crackers in our snack center. They’re a snack that contains no artificial flavors or preservatives and are always baked with real cheese. It’s the snack that Moreaya always reaches for during snack time. She loves the bright, fun colors and I love that those bright, fun colors are actually sourced from plants!
When I’m hungry I can hardly focus on anything else and the same is true for my girls. That’s why snack time is the first thing on the schedule after they put away their backpacks and lunch boxes.
Organized Homework Center
While having a homework center will save time in the afternoons…
“Mom, where are my scissors?!”
“Mom, I can’t find any glue sticks.”
“Mom, all my pencils don’t have erasers!”
It will totally save your sanity as well. Homework time can be a source of frustration for a lot of kids and parents, but the more prepared you are, the easier it will go.
Not only is it great to have all your child’s needed supplies in one area, like in this Homework Center, but it’s a great idea to keep that area consistent with little distractions.
I hope you find these 4 after school hacks to help tackle your busy days with more ease. You can also find even more after school inspiration and snack ideas from Goldfish® on Pinterest.
