Are your indoor cats super active? Our two cats, Frosty and Bella certainly are. Even though they are well out of the kitten stage at almost 2 years old, they still certainly love to play.

In fact, I know that if I don’t provide them with enough toys, they get a little mischievous and make toys out of my things – like hair ties, pipe cleaners, and socks!

That’s one reason I decided they were definitely in need of some new cat toys. To be honest, I didn’t realize that I would find SO MANY types of cat toys!

While I love a good teaser wand to play with them, I was looking for something that could keep their attention when we weren’t playing with them. That’s when I found cat kicker toys.

Have you seen these?! It’s a pretty cool concept. There are a lot of different varieties, but most cat kicker toys are simply a long, soft yet firm, stick. If that sounds like a weird description, stay with me.

The cat kick stick needs to be long enough for the cat to hold with its front paws, while kicking with its back paws. It needs to be firm enough so it holds it’s shape, but soft enough that it bends and moves with a cat’s kicks!

While I was shopping around I didn’t expect to find such a variety of kick sticks for cats, especially with some higher price tags. That’s when I decided to get crafty and make our own.

The idea behind the long kick sticks is that cats can hold them with their paws and kick with their back legs. They turned out great and are now Frosty and Bella’s favorite toys!

fabric, scissors, fabric bunting to make cat toy

This DIY cat kicker toy is super easy to make. If you have about 10 minutes, a sewing machine, fabric, and bunting, you can whip up a few to get your cats playing in no time.

Actually here’s exactly what you need for this easy project:

  • Fabric scraps – you’ll need a size about 3″x16″ to make sticks similar in size to mine. Although, any size will do!
  • Fabric bunting – this is for stuffing the sticks.
  • Catnip* [optional]

*I know catnip is super controversial – actually it’s something I didn’t know until I started blogging about my cats. That’s why it’s definitely optional as your cats will love these kick stix whether they contain catnip or not!

I’m definitely a beginning seamstress myself, but sewing these kick sticks is super easy.

steps to make cat kicker toy
  1. Once you’ve cut your fabric in your desired size, fold over and iron inside out. Sew the long side and bottom together, leaving one end open for stuffing.
  2. Turn your fabric from inside out. I love using a chopstick for turning projects.
  3. Stuff your fabric sleeve with bunting so that it’s stiff.
  4. Add in catnip, if you choose. You can even add in bells to make your cat kicker toy even more fun!
  5. Fold your fabric ends down and sew the top of your kick stick.

I also shred old fabric scraps for the fill. And I take about half of them and soak them in catnip spray for about a day, then use them inside the kicker once they're dry. I also twist the ends, put a few stitches (and sometimes a drop of glue because I am TERRIBLE at sewing) and then I tie other things around the ends that the cats enjoy - ribbon, mesh tubing (they're OBSESSED, Idk why), twine, things like that. If I'm feeling particularly crafty, I'll sew on a extra little flap of fabric, like a pocket, and give it some Velcro for closure so that I have a place to put fresh catnip sometimes. The cats love them.

So is the kick stick only 8”long when complete?

@Laura, starts at 16" so you'll loose 1/2" stitching up the ends. So they will be 2 3/4 x 15 when complete.

I put about 1 tsp. Catnip and a 3/4” bell inside. Success!!
