While planning Sophia’s Mickey Mouse Birthday Party, I wanted to DIY pretty much everything. It’s personal so it means so much more to the birthday kid, your guests and you can bring everything together in terms of color and design, and most of the time it will save you money!

While I like to go above and beyond for our birthday parties, I realize that I need to stay on budget too. I try to find little shortcuts and this DIY birthday candle craft is definitely one of them.

You can find these dollar number candles just about anywhere, but they rarely match a party theme and sometimes, let’s face it, they are just plain ugly.

So I decided to bling this yellow number two candle up a notch and didn’t even double the price! For this candle, I spent about $1.77! The candle itself was only $1 and the bag of sequins, which I have some leftover for future projects were only $0.77!

I used a single Paint Marker to color over that yellow so it would match our red, blue, and black party color scheme. I already had the paint markers from our Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Sign and used them several types in party prep.

The wax was a little tricky to paint on and I had to go back and go over it again a few times, but it worked really well!

I didn’t want to put a lot of money into the candle, so I bought the cheap sequins in the craft aisle at Walmart and coupled them with a few buttons from my button drawer. I overlapped them to add more detail and texture.

I adhered them to the candle with a hot glue gun. As you may imagine, it was a bit tricky as the wax wanted to melt a bit, but it worked.

I had some glitter paint and added that over the entire candle to really make it shine. I think it really made the finishing touch!

Jasmine, you can find them in the craft department at Walmart! They come in all shades! :) It did take some patience and a few coats on parts because it wanted to slide off, but I finally got it to stick! :)
