I read a quote once that I didn't understand until I had children.  It went something like, "Your dog/cat is your baby before you have children.  Once you have children, your dog/cat becomes a pet".  This has happened in our house.  I have a cat that's been a part of my family for 11 years and before Sophia was born, she was my baby... the one he greeted me everyday when I returned from work.  Once I had Sophia and especially with Moreaya as well, she's a cat again.  She doesn't get quite the attention she used to, but she's fine with it... she's a cat after all - she tends to like being ignored. Someone who doesn't quite fit that mold is our Yorkshire Terrier, Smokey!  He doesn't seem to think that he should become "just a pet" just because we have two girls to take up most of our time now!
