Let’s Get Down and Dirty – Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Menstrual Cups

sckoonmenstrualcup

I recently wrote a post about how how my Menstrual Cup Changed My Life.  I got quite a bit of positive feedback from the post and quite a bit of "Huh?  Seriously?" type feedback too!  So, I put out the question on the So Easy Being Green Facebook page and got some great questions about menstrual cups.  I also scoured FAQs about the subject and am going to tackle those too - in a very down-to-Earth, non-technical way {because that's how I like to learn and read and hopefully you do too!} Knowledge is Power.  I didn't know a thing about menstrual cups a year ago, well, other than seeing an occasional blog post on the subject every now and then.  The first time I tried to use my cup I failed miserably.  I only tried once that first cycle.  My next cycle, I really, … [Read more...]

7 Ways My Menstrual Cup Changed My Life

menstrual cup

I hinted in my giveaway post for a Lunette Cup how this product changed my life.  You may have thought I was joking a bit, but I'm totally not.  It has literally changed my life and I finally found freedom from my period. If you haven't been able to tell yet, this post might be a little sensitive to male ears, so there's your warning.  First, this isn't my first experience with a menstrual cup.  I used the my first menstrual cup for a few months and blogged about it.  Honestly, I really liked it but hadn't been using it long enough to really feel comfortable.  It took 3-4 cycles for me to fully learn how to use the cup and how it best worked for me. So, when the Lunette came I was excited to see what the differences were.  We'll cover those, then I'll give you the 7 ways … [Read more...]

Another Alternative to Disposable Sanitary Products – the DivaCup

DivaCup Boxes

This Summer I wrote a pretty lengthy series about Mama Cloth.  If you're interested in reading up on it, please do so, but here's the shortened version for you - Mama Cloth is another term for re-usable cloth menstrual pads.  They're easy to care for, safer for your body and the environment than disposable products, and will save you money in the long run.  I tried Mama Cloth as a part of the It's a Girl Thing Period! Cloth Challenge and am so glad that I did. But, I did get lots of feedback from readers who talked about their love for a menstrual cup!  So, I decided to see what that was all about - and share it with those of you that may be in the dark about the DivaCup. Did you know that the first menstrual cup was patented in the 1930s?  I didn't.  I had never even heard of a … [Read more...]

seedplanted

This is the fifth post in my Mama Cloth series.  You can find out why I’m blogging about them here or read the 1st part , 2nd part, and 3rd part {review of It’s a Girth Thing Period Pads!}, 4th part, and 5th part. **Remember, these posts are all about menstruation and being comfortable with the topic and your body – if you’re not interested, please skip this post! One of the biggest reasons that It's a Girl Thing Period! {a division of Posh Pads} decided to host this challenge was so that the word of disposable alternatives would be spread.  Obviously they wanted to reach as many people as they could, but one of the most important groups to them, is young females by way of their Mothers.  If we can get Moms on board, then their daughters will follow... Our vision is to help others make an … [Read more...]

Before we get to it - we have 1 comment to address from the last post: Emily says:  Umm, wow. Seriously!? I nearly got SICK looking at that moldy thing! GROSS! I’ve heard of people using Mama cloths, and even have some friends who do. I cloth diapered, but for some reason haven’t been able to bring myself to use cloth pads. I’m not sure how I missed parts 1, 2, and 3, but am going back to read them now. If they are anything like this one, you can rest assured I will … [Read more...]

This is the fourth post in my Mama Cloth series.  You can find out why I’m blogging about them here or read the 1st part , 2nd part, and 3rd part {review of It's a Girth Thing Period Pads!}. **Remember, these posts are all about menstruation and being comfortable with the topic and your body – if you’re not interested, please skip this post! Before we tackle today's subject, I did want to address a couple of comments that I received on my last post about this topic: Karin says "I’m so glad you are reviewing this! Here’s a question for you: Before you put them in the wash, do you need to do anything with them? Like diapers, you need to swish in toilet, or whatever. Or is it like breast fed poo, where everything is water soluble? I know this is a weird question.. and maybe tmi? But most periods, esp at the beginning… … [Read more...]

Mama Cloth {a Series}: Part 3 – Cloth Menstrual Pads from It’s a Girl Thing Period!

This is the third post in my Mama Cloth series.  You can find out why I’m blogging about them here or read the 1st part and 2nd part. **Remember, these posts are all about menstruation and being comfortable with the topic and your body – if you’re not interested, please skip this post! Before we tackle a review of this particular brand, I did want to address a comment that I received on my last post about this topic: Becky Fluff says:  I use mama cloth and I LOVE IT!! But, I have heard that it is best to NOT wash in hot water because, unlike with cloth diapers where iron is not an issue, there is an issue with the reaction of iron with hot water… I can’t remember the exact details, but I know that I have read somewhere to wash in warm/cold water. I hadn't read anything about this so I tried to do a little digging.  … [Read more...]

Mama Cloth {a Series}: Part 2 – Prep, Laundering, and Storage

IMG_3847

This is the second post in my Mama Cloth series.  You can find out why I’m blogging about them here or read the 1st part here. **Remember, these posts are all about menstruation and being comfortable with the topic and your body – if you’re not interested, please skip this post! One of the things that scares people away from using cloth menstrual pads is the worry about washing them.  I promise, it's not hard {or gross} at all!  If you cloth diaper your child, you'll find that the process is very similar and you'll probably use some of your cloth diaper accessories with your Mama Cloth too! Prep: I've read a couple of different opinions on prepping your cloth pads.  One says treat them like you would your cloth diapers - they need to be washed a few times so they'll be more absorbent.  I just don't see this really being … [Read more...]

Mama Cloth {a Series}: Part 1 – My First Week w/ No Disposables

clothchallenge2

This is the first post in my Mama Cloth series.  You can find out why I'm blogging about them here. **Remember, these posts are all about menstruation and being comfortable with the topic and your body - if you're not interested, please skip this post! I did it.  I went an entire cycle using only cloth and no disposable products... and I'm getting ready to do it again!  Although I am dreading it, I mean really - who enjoys the monthly visitor - I don't dread buying disposable products and throwing money out with the trash! I really encourage anyone who is on the fence about using cloth pads to try them out.  You can always start with a panty liner or two and see how it goes from there. For the most part, my first cycle with all cloth went fine.  I don't have a gigantic stash of pads so I had to wash every other day, … [Read more...]

POSH Pads It’s A Girl Thing PERIOD Cloth Challenge

clothchallenge1

I am really excited about an upcoming blog series that I'll be doing as a part of the It's a Girl Thing PERIOD Cloth Challenge! It's a Girl Thing PERIOD is a division of Posh Pads.  A few months ago, they put a challenge out to some of their Facebook fans and asked if anyone was interested in switching to Mama Cloth completely.  I accepted the challenge and here we are! Our vision is to help others make an informed choice in switching to cloth, encourage them to try them and help clear our minds of the fear that cloth is something gross, hard to care for or not worth the trouble.  We know it's not for everyone, although who ever thought sticking a tampon up our woohoo was such a wonderful idea in the beginning.  We have to retrain our minds and for the young girls start them on the path with cloth.  I really feel like that is … [Read more...]
