Kids Garden Activity: ReUse Yogurt Cups to Plant Organic Seeds

It’s Spring time and we’ve been spending every possible moment that we can outside during these last few weeks. The girls love it and it gives me a renewed sense of energy, especially after all the moving stress that’s been happening!

We’re in our new house and absolutely loving our surroundings but one thing we’re definitely missing is our container gardens this year.

Our new home has a wonderful yard but building our container gardens has been put on the back burner for a bit until we’re really settled in. But that doesn’t mean we have to skip on the Spring planting season, of course!

As a brand partnership for the month, Stonyfield Organic connected us with High Mowing Organic Seeds for our garden. We were sent quite the spread of seeds and that little lady above couldn’t have been happier.

Besides outside arts and crafts, her next favorite thing to do in the world is to be outside planting [as long as she doesn’t get dirty, of course]!

Since this project was born out of a collaboration with our friends at Stonyfield, I just had to get creative on how we were going to get our seeds to sprout – since we’re not sowing them right into the container gardens this year.

We chose to use our YoBaby containers this year for a couple reasons – the first being that we have a ton of these cups because Moreaya and I still love the YoBaby yogurt and two because I needed something a little more sturdy to sit on our kitchen windowsill.

I let the girls choose which of the seeds they wanted to plant first and was pleasantly surprised by a couple of their choices [mainly the Summer Squash and choice of Peppers], but wasn’t at all surprised when Moreaya immediately chose to plant the organic tomato seeds as that girl eats tomatoes like their candy!

What if I were to tell you that there’s NO reason to waste your time looking at the racks of seeds inside your local big box stores anymore? It’s true – I spend way too much time perusing the racks to find the few organic seeds that they carry and I always get so frustrated at the selection.

Well, not only does High Mowing Seed have your Vegetables and Fruit seeds covered – they carry a wide variety of Herbs and Flower seeds as well.

Planting Organic Seeds

The best part is – you know if you see it on their website or in their catalog [request your free catalog here], it’s organic and non-gmo… no guessing and no extra reading required. The best part? They offer Free Shipping on ALL standard orders to the US and Canada!!! Seriously – no reason to buy seeds anywhere else now, right?!

We’ll likely be planting our veggies right into my in-laws garden, since we won’t have our own this year, but that way the girls will still get to tend to their plants and watch the amazing process of growing their own food from seeds!

Do your kids love to garden?
Where do you start your organic seeds – straight in the ground or in starter cups?

It's a good idea to reuse yogurt cups as seed starters! This spring we made our seed starting in egg shells and old egg cartons, and my girlie was absolutely fascinated of the results. She's very curious about planting seeds and watches the whole process very carefully. harvesting the vegetables is her other favorite part.

Thank you so much. this is exactly what I have been looking for, a mom that is living green lol or going green with kids. It is a hard transition and very over whelming at times, mainly because due to life reasons we are loving with my parents and they are very set in their ways and state that they "DO NOT NEED TO BE RE_EDUCated on anything lol I have barely been able to get them to recycle lol I have a ton of organic seeds to plant we have just had to find the time and now I was worried it was too late in the season??? Do you think it would still be ok to plant? Love your blog and all your information and your giveaways are fabulous :)

I love the idea of reusing yogurt cups! My daughter loves yogurt and I always wondered if there was something else I could be doing other than throwing them straight into the recycle bin. Thanks for the idea. :)

This is a super cute idea! I love that they offer free shipping! Looking forward to maybe planting something this year. I'm worried about my dogs digging it up! Cant' wait to see the updated pictures of your project!
