Southern Sweet Cole Slaw Dogs

southernsweetcoleslawdogs

Summer is in full force here in east Tennesee.  Even though most schools are already back in session in our part of the country, temperatures are unwavering and the east Tennessee humidity in August says that Summer isn’t anywhere close to being done.  To my family that means… it’s grilling season!

We grill pretty much all year around, but in the Summer it’s just so convenient.  You don’t freeze when going in and out while cooking, you don’t heat up your house even more by cooking in the kitchen, and it’s just more fun to cook food outside, right?!  Not to mention the taste of a deliciously grilled hamburger!

Today I’m sharing with you one of my favorite Grilling Sides.  This cole slaw recipe tastes perfect a-top a grilled hot dog, alongside a hamburger, grilled chicken breast… with really just about anything you can imagine!  Have a favorite slow cooked BBQ recipe?  Try it on that too!

What makes this recipe super unique is the bit of sugar that gives the cole slaw just a hint of sweetness and the vinegar, oh the sweet crisp of the added Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.  I used to only use regular vinegar in my Cole Slaw Dressing, but now that I’ve tried the apple cider, I won’t be switching back anytime soon!  It gives us just a little extra umph that is too good to pass up!

Southern Sweet Cole Slaw Dressing

What You’ll Need:

  • Bag of Shredded Cabbage Cole Slaw Mix
  • 1/2 cup of Mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup of Sugar
  • Salt & Pepper {the pepper makes this dressing really pop too – so don’t skimp on it!}
  • 1/8 cup of Heinz Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar

Sure, you can shred your own cabbage, but I hardly ever do.  Maybe if we start growing cabbage in our organic garden, I’ll start!

Mix all of your dressing ingredients together and then pour on top of your cabbage and mix together.  The original recipe, passed down from my Mom, was double the ingredients, but I found that after being refrigerated, the slaw was just too wet for my tastes.  If this one seems to dry for you, simply double everything.

The cole slaw is ready to eat immediately, but definitely tastes better after it’s been refrigerated for a bit of time – at least an hour, so the cabbage can soak up that sweet and tangy Southern Sweet Cole Slaw Dressing you just made!
