My Number 1 Baby Registry Item – Video Baby Monitor

I'm by no means a Baby Registry expert, but after having 2 babies I do know what I used and didn't use that was on my Baby Registry Checklist!

Video Baby Monitor

When I was pregnant with Sophia {who is now almost 3 – EEK!}, hubby and I tossed around the idea of purchasing a video baby monitor.  We finally concluded that it was just too much of an expense and didn't think it was really needed.

Oh boy were we wrong!

That is one {along with a few more} of my biggest regrets.  It would have made me sleep easier with my first baby, I know!

We did end up getting a video monitor when Moreaya was first born.  He helped me relax so much more at night when she was transitioned to her crib.  From that moment, any time someone asked me what should and shouldn't be on their Baby Registry, I always said a video baby monitor!  Although mine helped, it was far from perfect, but I didn't know that… until now!

NextStep IP Pro

I didn't realize just how much I was missing out on with our previous video monitor.  I haven't tested every video baby monitor on the market, but I'm pretty sure that if I did, the NextStep IP Pro would rank up there with the best of them – at a much better price, but more on that in a bit!

First, a little background on the NextStep brand and company itself…

NextStepBabyMonitors is a family owned and operated business based in Southern California, founded in 2004.  We've used our products with our own children and only carry systems we would use in our own home.

I've had exceptional service from the NextStep staff and have been offered all types of support.  Luckily, my hubby is a bit of a technology guru, so he was able to set our wireless NextStep IP Pro up completely by himself.  But their techs are just a phone call away… for as long as you own your monitor!  That's right, lifetime supportMatch that big box stores!

Video BabyMonitor

The Video Baby Monitor sits discreetly atop the girls' bookshelf and also comes with a bracket for wall mounting.  I was so excited when I saw that I can see both girls at the same time with the wide angle lens.  But guess what?  If I can't see one of them because they're too far to the left or right I can move the camera… with my iPhone!

The Pan/Tilt feature is by far one of my favorites with this monitor.

There are quite a few other features that the NextStep IP Pro boasts that I couldn't possibly share them all, so here are some of my favorites:

  • Secure Direct Connect
  • Upgraded Audio {yep, I can hear the girls through my iPhone, iPad, and computer}
  • Talk Back Capability {I can talk back through my phone and it's so funny because Sophia answers me, thinking I'm in the room.}
  • NightVision {picture on the right is with all lights turned off}

Video Baby Monitor Nightvision

You can choose to view the camera both inside your house, running on your wireless router and you can also set up the camera for outside of your home-viewing.  We have chosen to not turn that capability on, since we're using it as a Video Baby Monitor for now.  When the girls outgrow the need for a video monitor, we're definitely going to use this as a home monitoring system.  Because you are able to set volume and motion alerts too!

I definitely check on the girls more often during their nap times, just because it's convenient to open the camera up quickly on my iPhone and iPad.  I downloaded the recommended app so I could use all of the great, secure features.

The camera can be viewed through PCs, Macs, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices.

Within the app, you have the option of leaving audio on even when your screen or iPhone is locked, so you've constantly got an ear in the room.  I have noticed that this dramatically decreases my battery life on my iPhone though, but it's a nice option if this is going to be the only baby monitor that you use – just plug your phone up at night – easy fix.

I can't stress enough how much a video baby monitor has eased my mind as a parent and I know I'll continue to use it for another couple of years as my girls get older and start playing more independently.

The NextStep IP Pro Video Baby Monitor comes in Black and White and retails for $149.99 on the NextStepBabyMonitors.com.

I love that you can pan and tilt the camera remotely.  We have three kids in one room and this is the only video monitor that I've seen that will allow me to see all three of the kids.  I suspect the talk-back feature will also come in handy for the many time the boys are playing in the room instead of sleeping.
