Smiling Tree Toys
about us:
We're Justin and Kathleen, fun loving kids-at-heart with a deep appreciation for living simply and being kind to mother nature. We’ve been creating wooden gifts for family and friends for over 10 years now. In January 2010 we embarked on a journey to turn our passion into a small business. We started by designing custom cutting boards and kitchen utensils, and after our daughter was born later that year we slowly found our way to the world of children’s toys. Our motivation is simple: to do our small part of good in the world by creating safe, natural, handmade wooden toys that minimize our eco-footprint. We want to offer children everywhere the opportunities to learn, grow, create, and imagine with heirloom hardwood toys that are safe, inspiring, open-ended, and educational. We also strongly believe in giving back (as former Peace Corps Volunteers we donate to Peace Corps Youth Development projects for every toy sold), supporting American businesses (we source our cotton drawstring bags from a family business in the southern United States and work with local or American-based vendors whenever possible), and respecting Mother Nature (we use certified sustainably harvested American hardwoods, finish our pieces with our homegrown organic oil blend, re-use brown packing paper and recycled boxes for shipping, and participate in our local green energy program).
about our toys:
Smiling Tree Toys are made using the finest American-grown hardwoods available. We take great care to handcraft every toy to perfection and believe our passion for high-quality, eco-friendly toys shows through in every aspect of our family business. One of the most unique aspects about our wooden toys is the homegrown organic oil blend with which we finish our toys. It's a one-of-a-kind blend is made from camelina oil and beeswax, both of which are grown/harvested on our family's certified organic farmland. Camelina is a close relative of flaxseed. Not only is it a nutritious culinary oil high in Omega-3's, but it's also a great natural finish for wood! We blend it with a bit of pure beeswax (to add a nice sheen and a bit of waterproofing), and brush it on every one of our toys (with the exception of our maple teethers, which we leave unfinished). Learn more about our camelina oil/beeswax blend at Smiling Tree's blog, and pay a visit to Omega Maiden Oils – our family business that grows, processes, and sells Omega Maiden organic camelina oil.
The SEBG family is quite fond of these handcrafted toys too. You can check out a personal Smiling Tree Toys Review that I wrote in October of 2011.

I’ve never heard of them before, but thank you so much for sharing! I love how the toys look, and that they are handcrafted!
Love the toys. They look so athentic, so natural
Awesome toys! I love seeing behind how a product (toy) is made. And homemade lasts so much longer! My husband’s grandfather made us a hardwood slay for the kids before he passed away about six years ago and it’s so durable, the kids love it!
That’s so special that they have something like that that he made for them!
These really are some lovely handmade toys!!! Great job.
I love handmade toys and especially wooden ones.
These are very cool!
Fantastic! I love that they’re handmade and “old school”. The worst case scenario is our children build an imagination
Oh fun! That balancing block toy looks so cool! I am a huge fan of the beauty and simplicity of wooden toys!
I know – I want that one for my girls too!
How neat!!! And I love, love, love the little one helping pack the wagon!
These are great toys! I one a rattle awhile back and my little guy loves to chew on it.
And you have peace of mind about him doing that too, don’t you!?
So cute! I love handmade toys! They last so much longer!
