Too Cold Outside? Toddlers Enjoy Indoor Snow Play

Indoor Snow Play

It snowed here in east Tennessee yesterday!  Even though we sometimes have pretty cold Winters, it seems that we haven't had a really good snow in a few years.  The girls went down for a nap and when they awoke a couple hours later, the entire ground was white!

Both girls are just getting over some sickness, so there was no way we were going to let Moreaya go out in the snow, but we hated to deprive Sophia.  She was just so excited to see a big snow {3 inches!} for the first time.  So, we bundled her up and Rob took her out to play for, oh, probably a total of 10 minutes.

Snow Play

It didn't matter – it was long enough for her to feel like she really got to play in it and she had fun!

But this morning she was begging me to let her go back out and play.  A 2 1/2 year old just doesn't understand that her sister is sick and can't be left inside while we frolic in the snow outside.  So… what did we do?  I brought the snow inside!

Indoor Snow Play

This turned into quite the toddler learning activity.  We talked about the science of snow – why it's here, what it's made of, etc.  She had some sensory exposure AND asked to wear mittens after a few minutes.  The snow was quite frozen, so she couldn't really mold it, but she really enjoyed shoveling it from bucket to bucket!  I knew investing in so many sand buckets for Moreaya's Beach Birthday Party would come in handy!

Indoor Snow Play

I simply laid out a blanket and let her go for it.  With a few sand toys, she played very contently for a little over an hour – which is awesome for this busy, little girl.

And the mess?  Super easy cleanup!  Just toss the snow back outside, wash the blanket and dry your floor with a towel!

Fun Indoor Snow Play and easy to clean is a Winner in my book!

  1. Oh how fun! I’m sure she had a good time playing with the snow – outside and in.

  2. Let it snow!
At least it snows some place, indoor and out

  3. So freakin’ cute! I just love this idea. I am going to try it the next day it snows.

  4. What a great idea! I never would have thought to bring the snow inside {except for snow ice cream}! Looks like she is having a bunch of fun, regardless!

    Dawn

  5. That’s such a great idea! Can you mail us some?? :)

  6. I need to try this next time it snows. It turned to ice here recently then melted mostly. Rissa loves playing in it but daddy and her always seem to come back inside too soon! She will beg and beg to go play in the snow.

  7. What a great idea! We only had snow for 1.5 days and Bubbles was so disappointed that she only got to play in it a couple of times. I should have gone out and scooped up what I could find for her to play with inside like that. Smart!

  8. Love this idea. So much easier than dressing up the small ones to go outside only for them to be cold in 5 minutes!

  9. So fun! Though I don’t think I’d be able to convince my son that we should bring the snow inside.

  10. That is such a great idea! It looks like she has just as much fun as she did outdoors. My son is older, though, and if I brought snow in for him, he’d have it all over the entire house! In fact, he recently left a snow ball in the freezer just to see how long it would stay that way.

  11. OMG I would have never thought about this. We don’t have any snow right now but I will be doing this with my boys. Noah would love it!

  12. What a sweet idea! We live in SC and rarely get snow, but went home to Toronto for Christmas and the kids got to experience a few days of snowfall – I will definitely have to bring some snow indoors the next time we get up there!

  13. I LOVE this idea and need to do it the next time it snows! My daughter doesn’t have snow pants, so she can’t play outside for too long anyway, so I need to do this. BOTH kids would really enjoy it!

  14. That’s such a great idea. You’re an awesome mom to allow snow in your house. Looks like she had fun with it.

  15. I love this idea. Wish we had atleast a portion of that snow here in Texas!!

  16. What a wonderful idea! I love that you turned a fun activity into a learning experience as well. We very rarely get snow in Texas (duh!) but when we do, it is difficult to let my boy stay outside for very long. Next time, we will try something like this! Good thinking, mommy!

  17. What a great idea! I never would have thought of this. I’ll have to give this a try sometime soon. :)

  18. This is such brilliant idea. We had been having a pretty mild winter up until a couple days ago; now it’s really chilly and icky.

  19. Awe so fun! And, she is so pretty!!!

  20. This is an awesome idea – thanks! I have 2 girls too (5 months and almost 3), and we ran into this same issue last week when big sister just wanted to play in the snow.
