I have been loving reading what everyone wants to put in their SqueeZurts Reusable Snack Tubes. Wait. Don't know what I'm talking about? Then you've probably not read the comments as on the Bellies to Babies Giveaway Event post.
There's a ton of great ideas in the Post Comments that range from Applesauce to Yogurt to Fruit Purees to Breastmilk! The reusable snack tubes really are versatile and you could probably put just about anything in them.
I had a few pieces of fresh fruit that had seen better days so I thought we could puree them up and make Sophia and Moreaya some yummy Frozen Fruit Pops. Even though the SqueeZurts Refillable Snack Tubes are definitely made to use in the freezer, no one says you have to. Yogurt, AppleSauce, Homemade Baby Food Purees and much more could be served at room temperature or cool from the Refrigerator.
There's just something about a "popsicle" that screams treat to Sophia, though. She doesn't have to know that it's only fruit!
SqueeZurts are made from PEVA, a vinyl composite that is PVC free (chlorine free), phthalate free, lead free, BPA free, and biodegradable! PEVA is used in many reusable food containers (such as fabric lunch boxes and sandwich bags), teething rings, and bibs, as well as a variety of other uses.
In our fruit bowl, we had 2 mangoes and a pear that, if Moreaya was still eating purees, I would have made for her. They were a little too soft to eat, but no need to throw them away!
I sliced everything up and even thought to grab a clementine and pull it apart to add to the flavor.
Everything went straight into the blender. I toyed with the idea of adding fruit juice, but decided not to and see how the consistency would be without it.
It was definitely a thicker consistency, but the mangoes made it juicy enough that I was pretty sure it would work well. The SqueeZurts Starter Kit comes with 6 Reusable Snack Tubes and a Dispensing Bottle. I had thought that I would have to strain the fruit puree because I obviously had a few chunks, but since the opening of the Dispensing Bottle is pretty small – it did that job for me!
When I opened the pack of SqueeZurt Tubes, I was happy to see the directions for everything on the back of the label. They recommend you only fill the tubes about 2/3 of the way full. I was able to put a bit more in them, but I did leave some room at the top. **EDIT: The creator of SqueeZurts let me know that the tubes will expand when freezing, which may cause your tubes to burst if they're overfilled. This is why they recommend filling only 2/3 full!** The Kit also comes with twisty ties, but I chose to use some small clips {like potato chip bag clips} on the tops.
After filling and closing them off, our SqueeZurts went into the freezer. The directions say to lay flat and let them freeze for 6-12 hours. It only took about 4 hours for ours to be frozen.
As per the directions, I ran the tubes under warm water for just a second. They pushed right up, just like any other type of popsicle! Within the SqueeZurts Starter Kit, you also receive 2 Li'l Hands Cold Sleeves. These slip right on the tubes and keep your kids hands from getting so cold. I'm so glad they include these because the tubes really do get cold.
The reusable snack tubes are just as easy to clean up as they are to fill. Simply run hot water, a little soap if you choose, and then let them dry. SqueeZurts recommends that you store them in the refrigerator between uses. But I don't think there will be many times that ours aren't being used!
Buy It: You can purchase SqueeZurts on their website, as well as on the The Kitchen Sink Etsy Shop. The Starter Kit retails for only $19.95 and a pack of 6 SqueeZurts is $15.00.
