Real Diaper Week: $$$ Savings using Cloth Diapers

This blog post is a part of a series to celebrate Real Diaper Week and the Great Cloth Diaper Change that will be taking place this Saturday, April 21, 2012.  Each day this week, I’ll be discussing a different angle on the topic of cloth diapers to bring more awareness to the Event and to CD’s themselves!  Feel free to chime in by way of the Comments section, or if you’re a blogger yourself – JOIN IN the fun!

Real Simple Real Diapers Savings – Cost savings, diapering on a budget, cloth diaper banks or support organizations

I’ll admit… the first and foremost reason I chose to use cloth diapers on Sophia {and now Moreaya too} was Money.  I would about guarantee you that $$$ Savings is one of the top two reasons that every family decides to use cloth diapers.  Sure, the eco-friendliness was a big factor as well, and after choosing to use cloth, I’ve become green in other aspects of my life too, but money was definitely the deciding factor!

In my “Why Choose Cloth?” article, I share the savings in a very simple and easy to understand way…

Cloth Diapers are Better for your Wallet. – The average cost savings of using Cloth vs. Disposables is an alarming statistic on it’s own.

“Over a 3 1/2 year time period, you will have used over 8,700 disposable diapers on one child, totaling $2358 for discounted name brands and $1862 for generic/store brands.” – Source {great breakdown of diaper price}

There are factors that will determine just how much money you’ll save by using cloth diapers.

  • Types of cloth diapers you buy.  {Prefolds & Covers are by far the cheapest route of cloth diapering with Pockets/AIO’s being one of the most expensive routes – but still much cheaper than using disposables in the long run.}
  • Whether you purchase all new or some used diapers.
  • How many you buy or how big your stash is.
  • If you re-use the diapers for more than 1 child.

No matter how you choose to build your stash and what types of diapers you choose to use on your little one, you’ll be making a huge impact on our Earth and Waste Reduction as well as on your Wallet!
