We love our iPhone apps!

I count some of my iPhone apps as invaluable tools… I really do!  When we’re out and about and Sophia is getting a bit bored, I hand her my iPhone.  When it’s time to dry her hair after a bath and she’s refusing, I hand her my iPhone.  It’s become quite the parenting tool for me!

I don’t let her do just anything, though.  I’ve discovered the vast amount of Oceanhouse Media apps and just love the content for her!  Sometimes a lot of apps you see are only geared towards older children, but Oceanhouse Media’s book apps really appeal to Sophia!

This time around I downloaded a couple different ones.  First up is Five Little Monkeys Go Shopping by Eileen Christelow.  We already have one of the Five Little Monkey apps and it’s always one that Sophia asked to watch so I knew she would love this one!  It doesn’t have quite the amount of repetition that she seems to like in stories right now, but I know she’ll grow to like it more as she gets bigger.

One thing about these apps, and most all of the other apps available from Oceanhouse Media, is that they appeal to readers {and non-readers} of all ages.  They have 3 options: Read To Me; Read Myself, and Auto Play.  Right now I use Auto Play because Sophia doesn’t know how to swipe the phone to turn the page just yet.  The Auto Play feature runs the story app continuously through so she can enjoy it “by herself”.

The second app that we’re loving right now is Picture Me: Cute As Can Bee!  This is unlike any other app we have as I can put Sophia’s picture right into the story!  She becomes the title character Bumblebee, as well as a Flower, Bunny Rabbit and more!  This is a perfect app for little ones and great for Spring Time!

Buy It:  You can purchase both of these apps in the iTunes Store.  The   retails for $1.99 and is available on iOS and Android.  The Picture Me: Cute As Can Bee retails for $0.99 and is available on iOS only.

Fluffy Friday: bumGenius Freetime from Bouncing Babies {giveaway!}

I have a feeling this Fluffy Friday is going to be a popular one!  Today, I get to share with you one of the newest Cloth Diapers on the market, all thanks to the lovely ladies behind Bouncing Babies!

Just in case you haven’t heard or saw the new bumGenius Freetime yet, here are the Specs:

3×3 snap down design* adjusts the sizing to fit small, medium and large sizes (approximately 8-35+ pounds).
One step cloth diaper – no stuffing!
Semi-attached, stay dry inserts dry faster and allow for customized absorbency where your child needs it most.

I know, I know… I say it every time I try a new diaper, but this truly is one my absolute favorite diapers that I’ve ever tried!  For real.  I had truly all but given up on my bumGenius.  I sold off the 4.0s that I had just because they wouldn’t work for Sophia with the one microfiber insert alone and when I double stuffed them, they were just too bulky.  I was also not liking the smallest setting on Moreaya.  The Newborn insert wasn’t enough absorbency for her, but the larger insert was too bulky.  But then bumGenius came back “and totally redeemed themselves {Lloyd Christmas reference there!}” with the Freetime!

Bouncing Babies sent us this lovely Albert in Snaps to try and since Sophia is potty trained during the day, I’ve been using it on her at nap time.  First, I love this print.  Who says it’s a boy print?!  I want to encourage Sophia’s love of Math and Learning even at an early age!  The photo on the right shows the way this diaper is made.  There are 2 stay dry soakers, sewn on opposite ends that overlap one another.  This allows for super fast line-drying {compared to the old BG AIO design}.  There is no pocket, but you could easily put another insert either under the inserts or one top of the stay dry – but trust me, you don’t want to that… these are super soft, absorbent, and truly feel dry even when the rest of the diaper is very wet!

The bumGenius Freetime is super trim on Sophia and even pretty trim on Moreaya {stay tuned… you’ll get to see one on her in an upcoming Review}.  I love the simpleness – no stuffing/un-stuffing.  Now that I have 2 little ladies to tend to, simple is the key.  You can adjust the absorbency where you need it, by folding one of the inserts different ways, but I’ve found that simply overlapping them gives us tons of absorbency!

I so highly recommend this diaper!  I also very highly recommend the Bouncing Babies store!  Megan and Stacey have been a pleasure to work with and strive to provide the best customer service.  They want you to feel comfortable coming to them with any questions about cloth diapers.

Not only do they have fabulous Customer Service at Bouncing Babies, but The Bouncing Babies store also runs fabulous sales {be sure to be in the know by liking them on Facebook and following their Blog} and offers Free Shipping in the US for orders over $49!

Today, Jenny is talking Cloth Wipes.  Be sure to check out her post and weigh in on if you use Cloth Wipes too!

Buy It:  You can purchase a bumGenius Freetime All In One Cloth Diaper for only $19.95 at Bouncing Babies!  They come in 2 Prints, tons of colors, and Snap/Aplix closure choices.

Win It:  One super lucky So Easy Being Green reader is going to win a $20 GC to the Bouncing Babies online cloth diaper store!  Use it on a Freetime or whatever you like!

Baby Massage {and a giveaway!}

I’m so excited to share this post with you all today!  If you have a little one at home {or know someone else that does}, I think you’re gonna love it!

When I was contacted to see if I was interested in reviewing the Laura Lacey Baby Massage – The Gift of Love DVD, I immediately went to the website to have a look around.  I was very impressed with the amount of educational knowledge located there… not only on Baby Massage alone, but all types of massage and Nutrition information for Women and Babies.  You really want to check it out.  I’m just a bit bummed that I live too far away from New Jersey to attend some of Laura’s workshops myself {but that’s where the DVD comes in handy}!

The magic of touch is that when you touch someone you are also touched. We all benefit from positive touch. And that is what massage is – positive touch.
I am a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist. I received my training from the acclaimed Swedish Institute in New York.  Since getting my degree I have continued to expand my learning experience, after all, learning is an ongoing process. I have

Laura Lacey

additional certifications is prenatal massage, infant massage training and various massage modalities.

Baby massage is definitely not a new thing on my radar.  When Sophia was an infant, I would rub her with some natural oil that I had purchased for this purpose.  But honestly, I’m not totally confident that I was “doing it right”.  I wasn’t too rough and she never cried, but I just rubbed her.   No rhyme or reason to it.

After just a few minutes of watching this DVD, I feel totally confident in knowing how to actually do a Baby massage the right way.  The DVD is super easy to follow and doesn’t overwhelm you with lots of different types of motions.  They’re motions that you probably do all of the time with your little one, but now, there’s a reason and a flow to them!

Moreaya is such an easy going baby, but she normally doesn’t like to lay on her back for very long {maybe she thinks that’s her cue to go to sleep?}  But every time we do these massage techniques she lays there so well.  She seems to really enjoy it, I think.  I can’t really tell a difference in gas pains, but then again, she doesn’t have real problems and doesn’t have any colic tendencies.

The DVD is recommended for babies from about 1-9 months.  Although, toddlers love to be rubbed too!  {Sophia insists on getting a massage when Moreaya’s turn is over!}  I can already see and feel the bonding that happens when I am massaging Moreaya with these techniques!  I so highly recommend this DVD for any parents, grandparents with little ones!

Buy It:  You can purchase the Laura Lacey Baby Massage – The Gift of Love DVD for only $20.

Win It:  One lucky So Easy Being Green reader is going to win their very own copy of the DVD!

Fluffy Friday: the *new* Thirsties Duo AIO {giveaway!}

I’ve recently found a love for AIO’s.  It happened when Sophia was still in diapers, about 3 months ago or so.  I just love the trimness and the easiness of no stuffing!  Most of the AIOs that we have dry relatively quickly on the drying rack, even inside, so that’s not a problem as it used to be {some that I had tried before took forever}.

I’ve always had a love for Thirsties.

Thirsties® is a small (but growing!) cloth diaper company committed to greener parenting and Eco Friendly solutions, not to mention 100% USA Made quality! Erin, founder of Thirsties, started this business with an old sewing machine and $100 5 years ago. Through her hard work and diligence, the company is now one of the leaders in the cloth diaper industry. Our diapers are now made by work at home mothers, and very close to our warehouse, reducing our carbon output. Our customer service reps are experienced cloth diapering moms, and offer our knowledge to our retailers and customers alike.

In fact, their covers were some of the first diapers to be on Sophia when she was an infant.  So, when I heard about their new Duo All-in-One, oh yeah, I was ready to try it!

We received this beauty… no, not the lovely lady, but the Thirsties Duo AIO in the Alice Brights print, Size 1.  I also chose a Snaps closure, even though I normally prefer Aplix for Moreaya because it’s easier, faster, and you get a better fit usually.  The snaps on this diaper are good quality, spaced well, and have only 1 row, so they’re pretty simply to operate.

If you’re familiar with the Duo Fab Fitted, this AIO is very similar.  I am a huge fan of that diaper as well, so to have a waterproof outer {basically the only difference in the two} is a genius idea!  The inside soaker is sewn in on the sides, but open at the top and bottom.  If it was a pocket diaper, we would call this a sleeve.  That’s the great thing about this AIO because you can actually add more absorbency, if needed, and it’s super easy to do with the top and the bottom being open.  This design also helps the diaper dry faster.  Don’t be fooled though.  It’s super trim but still holds quite a bit as Moreaya can easily wear this diaper for 3 hours without leaks.

As I said, Moreaya is wearing the Size 1, which fits 6-18lbs {0-9 months}.  In the past, I’ve found that they Size 1 doesn’t quite last to 18lbs, or it didn’t for Sophia, so definitely plan on a Size 2 if your babe is 15lbs or so, I think.  Moreaya is on the middle setting.  I used the smallest setting a couple of times, but like the fit much better with a bit of a higher rise.

Honestly, the Duo AIO is my favorite Thirsties product yet.  I love their Covers, Fab Fitteds, and Hemp Inserts too, but the AIO is, I think, going to be one of their best sellers.  It’s super easy to use, trim, and would be a fabulous addition to any stash!
Be sure to connect with Thirsties through their Facebook page and request a free catalog to see all of their lovely products!

So, you’ve heard my opinion on the new Thirsties Duo AIO and how it works on an itty, bitty babe.  Now, check out Jenny’s review of the same diaper on her toddler!

Buy It:  You absolutely can’t beat the price of this AIO.  Solid colors retail for $15.75 and Prints are just $1.00 more!  You can purchase at a huge variety of Thirsties retailers.

Win It:  One lucky So Easy Being Green reader is going to win their choice of the new Thirsties Duo AIO!

Prams, Pushchairs and Strollers, Oh My!

Depending on where you live, you will probably use varying methods of transportation for your baby. You may not be surprised to know that many countries have completely different ways to carry or move their babies; some regions even have varying names for exactly the same product.

Contrary to popular opinion the stroller is a relatively new invention, and is still used mainly in the west. Traditional methods used to transport babies include slings, which have been traced back as far as the pharaohs, and cradleboards, a method used by Native Americans. Both are widely used
throughout developing countries, and have recently been introduced into western culture in the form of baby wrap carriers that allow a mother to carry a child cradled against her chest, while leaving the hands free.

The stroller, or pram as it was originally called, was invented by William Kent in England during the 18th century. From the initial concept more modern inventions came about, including buggies and tandem pushchairs for twins or siblings, which hailed the popularity of the compact stroller. The pram, a term generally used in the UK, is still used for new born babies, as it allows babies to lie on their backs, and the mother to keep an eye on her pride and joy. A pushchair on the other hand is a forward facing stroller that is generally used when a baby is slightly older. In America we know these to be strollers, but in the UK the terms are separated to denote two different products. A cradleboard, although not used widely in the west, is a Native American baby carrier used to keep babies secure and comfortable. Not unlike swaddling, which has become increasingly popular over the last few years, a cradleboard involves wrapping up your baby in order to carry them on your back. This allows mothers to work with their children on their backs.

With so many different types of transportation, babies almost have more ways of getting about than we do! Not to mention many modern strollers with detachable car seats, and more bells and whistles than a luxury car. A little perspective can be thought provoking sometimes – how do you prefer to carry your little ones?

It’s Hemp Day! {Babykicks Giveaway!}

Let’s celebrate… Why?  Because it’s Hemp Day.  No, I didn’t make a typo.  Babykicks is now celebrating every Wednesday as Hemp Day {which is way cooler than the former name of Hump Day, right!?}  And although my cloth diaper posts are normally on Fluffy Fridays, who could resist something as fun as Hemp Day!

Most of you are probably aware of the Babykicks brand.  Even if you haven’t tried their diapers, chances are you’ve read rave reviews about their JoeyBunz hemp inserts.  They are my all-time favorite hemp inserts and I have, well, a lot.  By stuffing our diapers with 1 microfiber and 1 JoeyBunz, I was able to keep cloth diapering Sophia near the end {almost completely potty trained!} because microfiber alone just wasn’t cutting it.  I will sing JoeyBunz praises on and on… but let’s get to today’s review!

Sometimes organic diapers can be a bit boring, since they’re often natural colored, but the snaps on this diaper make it a bit more fun and easier for Dads to know where to size the diaper {or at least it does for Rob}.  But, I don’t just love the diaper because of the colored snaps or because it holds a ton {although that is quite the selling point for me}, I love it because it’s green!  It’s made of natural fibers… luxurious 50% certified organic cotton for softness, 33% natural hemp for absorbency and durability, and 17%% polyester for stretch.

Babykicks is a huge believer in hemp, which is why most all of their products contain the material AND why we’re celebrating Hemp Day today!

So, why hemp?

We use hemp because of its durability, absorbency, and it’s natural anti-microbial properties. This means your baby will be protected naturally from bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus.  Furthermore using hemp, instead of cotton, really is better for the environment. Hemp does not deplete the soil; in fact hemp leaves return nitrogen back to the soil, which improves soil fertility, therefore requiring less fertilizer for subsequent rotated crops.

Since Sophia was only 9 months old, we’ve been using a fitted/wool combination at nighttime.  Plain ‘ole pocket diapers just didn’t offer us enough absorption, even stuffed with hemp, because she was sleeping 11-12 hours at a time.  We’ve successfully used that combination for almost a year now.  Since I’m such a huge fan of Babykicks hemp inserts, when I saw the Organic Fitted, I just couldn’t wait to try it out!  Luckily, they agreed to let me and I now have a new favorite nighttime diaper for her!

Since Sophia is completely potty trained {at home} during the day, we’ve only used this diaper at nighttime.  I’ve stuffed it with an extra JoeyBunz and also used it with only the one insert that it comes with.  I like stuffing it with 2 to simply reduce the wetness on the diaper all over, but even with only the 1 insert, we had no leaks through our wool {which I think is thanks to the Wool and an amazingly absorbent diaper}.

The pictures above show just how trim this diaper is with the 1 insert.  It also shows how well it fits her.  She’s about 23 lbs now and still has one snap left on both sides.  I’ve also tried the Organic Fitted on Moreaya and it fits her really well, although, I do have to use a smaller/thinner insert in it to keep it from being too bulky.  I prefer to use it on Sophia, though, since she needs more absorbency than Moreaya does right now.  But, it truly is a One-Size diaper.

Buy It:  You can purchase a Babykicks One-Size Organic Fitted on their website or at a huge variety of retailers.  These diapers retail for $21.95 {and come with a free One-Size JoeyBunz insert  – $6.25 RV}.

Win It:  One lucky So Easy Being Green reader is going to win a Babykicks One-Size Organic Fitted diaper for themselves {well, for their babe}!  Happy Hemp Day!

My daughter is a Big Sister.

I think I have finally come to a realization that I’m a Mom of 2.  It’s been a hard concept to get my mind wrapped around {and I doubt I’m the only one}.  Our world used to revolve around one lovely little lady and now it revolves around 2 of them!

The first question when anyone has seen/talked to me recently is, “How’s the baby?”  But the second question is always the same as well… “How is Sophia handling being a Big Sister?”  It never fails.  Everyone wants to know how she’s doing and the funny thing is, they aren’t surprised at my response at all.  {So, why are they asking then?}

Sophia is a wonderful Big Sister.  I hoped she would be, I prayed she would be, and she is.  She loves Moreaya, wants to hold her constantly, wants to help feed her, and loves to push her in her swing.  She hasn’t offered to help change diapers yet, but I’m still hoping!  She kisses her Good Night and Good Morning everyday and talks to her about when she gets “bigger”.  She just told her this morning, while she was drinking her “tea” during her tea party with Dora, that “like tea. Bigger” {Translation: “Moreaya, you will like tea when you get bigger”.}  She lovingly refers to her as Little Sophie, because we so often tell her that “Sophia was little like Moreaya.  Sophia used this when she was little”, etc.

I couldn’t have hoped for a better Big Sister for Moreaya.

Swaddling Sisters
