Happy Birthday Little Friend!

Sophia wants to wish her little friend Amelia, (cute babe over at Marine Parents)…

Since she knew Amel wouldn’t be home on her birthday, she sent her card a few weeks early.  Here’s Soph very much enjoying the opportunity to sign her name on Amelia’s card.

I hope these girls can eventually have a Play Date (and us, Mommies too!)

AppleCheeks Giveaway! *closed*

Closed.  The winning comment, #90 out of 736 entries belonged to Melisa!  Congratulations!!!

It’s no secret that I love cloth diapers.  They truly are an addiction (just ask the hubs).  If you love them like me, then you understand why I have the feeling that I must try every type of cloth diaper that’s available, right?
So, it’s an understatement to say I was excited to have the chance to review AppleCheeks.  I’ve heard such rave things about this diapering system, but I’ll be honest, snaps just aren’t my thing so I hadn’t bought any on my own… yet.

Wow.  I was missing out… and if you haven’t tried them yet… you’re missing out too.  This has quickly became my favorite diaper in my stash.  So, let me tell you why!
This system is unique and at the same time, has the best features of all of my other diapers put together.  AppleCheeks uses a wide Envelope opening for their cover, which not only allows for easy stuffing, but you don’t have to un-stuff… my favorite feature!  Soft, but strong elastic at the back, legs, and front of the diaper helps contain e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g.  The trimness of this diaper is great, due to the insert.  The inserts are a square of bamboo fabric which you trifold (making it customizable) to insert into your the cover, giving you six layers of protection, which is why I put this diaper on Sophia when we’re heading out on the town.
Can you tell she loves this ball?
I was pleasantly surprised to receive a pack of AppleCheeks Flushable Liners in my package as well!  This was my first time to use diaper liners and I was so impressed.  They really help our diapers to stay stain-free and I am loving using them when we’re in public so I can dump the poo easily.  They will definitely be packed when we travel for vacations this year.
Why I Love AppleCheeks:  Really?  [see above].  I love every single thing about this diaper and I will definitely be adding lots more to our stash!
Buy It:  You can buy your own Little Bundle at the AppleCheeks Boutique for $29.00 (28.71 US).  The Flushable Liners are available for only $8.00 (7.92 US).
Win It:  One of you lucky So Easy Being Green readers is going to win a $25 (CAD) Gift Certificate to the AppleCheeks Online Boutique!!!
This giveaway will end on Sunday, March 6th at 11:59 pm, EST.  The giveaway is open to US and Canadian residents only.

EasyLunchBoxes Giveaway! *closed*

CLOSED.  Congrats to Tonya M, with comment #181 out of 239!

As you probably know by now, our family has taken the initiative to go green.  What you may not know, though, is the fact that we actively search for ways to save some green as well!

Once I decided to be a SAHM, Rob and I decided that we needed to cut back on certain expenses. Since neither of us have drug problems or an internet bingo addiction, one of Rob’s “sacrifices” for the family was that he decided to take his lunch to work instead of eating out.

It has worked great and we have managed to save around $25-$30/week with just this change of habit!  He often takes leftovers for his lunch the next day (super easy for me!), but we were using ALOT of plastic baggies, Cling wrap, and I just didn’t feel good about the wastefulness of it all.  Then I found a solution… an eco-friendly, bento style lunchbox from EasyLunchBoxes.com!
I was lucky enough to win an EasyLunchBox system from a fellow blogger and what did I do with it?  Well, I wrapped it up and gifted it to hubby for Christmas, of course!  He loved it!   Although, I made sure that I didn’t pick a girly color (I love that purple) and chose the Olive Green.
The sytem comes in 5 colors to choose from and the 4 containers come with different color lids!  It’s so bright and fun!
[the comparmentalized containers] fit perfectly inside the roomy EasyLunchbox carrying bag. And there is still plenty of room to throw in an extra snack or two, whole fruit, perhaps a thermos of soup, drink and ice block.  Flexibility is key, and since so many different things can fit, no matter what menu you choose to include, it packs easily and quickly. It’s amazing how much faster, greener, & easier lunch box packing is with the EasyLunchbox system.
Steak with Rice, Stuffed Mushrooms
One thing that I love about the EasyLunchBoxes.com website is the Lunch Ideas that they share!  I often get stuck in a rut (of leftovers) and don’t spice up hubby’s lunch, but I’m definitely going to try a few that I saw.
Rob would love this Sushi lunch!
Kelly also has a great musical web series, Let’s Do Lunch, running that is so much fun!
Why I Love the EasyLunchBox System:  It’s Eco-Friendly; No BPA, phthalates, lead, vinyl, or PVC; Safe for Dishwasher, Freezer, and Microwave; has Nesting Containers; has a Washable Cooler Bag (which is also PVC & Lead free)… just to name a few!
Buy It:  You can buy this affordable system, on the EasyLunchBoxes website, for only $21.90, plus tax!  (Another reason I love this lunch box!!)
Win It:  Get excited because Kelly has offered one lucky So Easy Being Green reader the chance to win their very own EasyLunchBox system, in your choice of cooler bag color, for free!!!This giveaway will end on Tuesday, March 1st at 11:59 pm.  The giveaway is open to U.S. and Canadian residents only.

Groovy Kids Music – Review and Giveaway! *closed*

Closed, Congrats to Jamie, with comment #71 out of 92!

I recently got the chance to review a funky, new children’s cd, called Groove Kid Nation: The Wheels on the Bus.

I was super excited to have new music for Sophia, as she is a music lover!  We are constantly listening to her cd’s in the car and I’ll admit, sometimes I get a bit bored with them.  They are the same “kiddy” songs that play over and over.  Enter… Groove Kid Nation!  I don’t know who likes it more… me or her!?!

Aimed at young children who like a groove thing, and adults who want a little funk in their lives, this is music meant to get everyone moving and thinking about music.  It’s multi-dimensional, multi-racial music for the whole family.  Groove Kid Nation is the brainchild of a Los Angeles based keyboardist, Rodney Lee, who decided to recreated what he could not find for his son: music reminiscent of growing up in the funk-filled, soul-infused 1960s and 70s.

The cd features the title track, Wheels On the Bus along with Itsy Bitsy Spider (definitely Sophie’s favorite!), The Alphabet Song, Three Blind Mice, and many more!  I promise you… you and your child won’t be able to keep from groovin’ to these beats!

Why I love this CD: It is such fun music and I love that I’m encouraging Soph to listen to a variety of types of music.  Also, love the fact that 10% of the wholesale price of The Wheels on the Bus will be donated to CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting poverty.

Buy It: CD package (including a 10-page colorful booklet) will be released on March 8, 2011.  It will retail for $15.98.  http://www.groovekidnation.com  (You can sample the tunes on their website!)

Win It: One lucky reader will win their very own copy of this fun CD!

Softbums Giveaway! *closed*

Closed, Congrats Leann L.

Tip of the Day:  Enjoy your fluff!  Make sure you buy (or win!) the cutest diapers that you can find because I promise you… when you get them out of the washer/dryer, they will make you smile!

I hope everyone has enjoyed my first blog event!  I hope I’ve brought to you some old laundry favorites and introduced you to new brands/companies/artists that you’ll support in the future.  I couldn’t end the event any other way than spotlighting a fabulous diaper, a hard-working and sweet cloth diaper store owner, and a chance to win some lovely fluff for your babe (and for you to launder!)
Cute N Fluffy Cloth Diapers is an online store that sells a variety of cloth diapers, cloth diaper detergent, and other accessories.  Jessica is currently busy stocking her store and updating the website, so all orders are being conducted through the store’s Facebook page.
When I found Jessica, I discovered that she and her family were preparing to re-locate and it just so happens that they will be moving very close to my hometown!  I’m very excited because not only have I made a great contact with an awesome lady who loves CD’s as much as me, but our local cloth diaper store shut down a couple of months ago, so I’m *hoping* she decides to open a storefront so I can drool over fluff in person!  Jessica has been a gem to work with and she kindly offered to sponsor a review for a Softbums Omni!  This is one of the most recent line of diapers that she carries in her store!
Have you tried a Softbums diaper yet?  If you haven’t, I promise you that you’re missing out!  I was lucky enough to win my first Softbums diaper, which was probably a good thing since I’m a bit leary about trying new diapers… I tend to stick with ones that I love.  These diapers are fantastic!
Softbums recently came out with the Omni System which made their diapers even better!  Now, not only can they be used as an AI2, which was the main purpose of the original Echo Shell, but they can be used as a Cover and a Pocket!

I will admit, I still primarily use them as the AI2 system, because it works so well, but I have found myself stuffing the pocket a few times!  When I opened the package from Cute N Fluffy Diapers and saw that Jessica sent us the new Miss Kitty print, I squealed with delight and immediately went to prepping!
Why I Love the Softbums Omni:  The versatility of this diaper is amazing.  I absolutely love the fact that I can snap in the inserts and use it as a pocket.  Speaking of inserts… the Super Dry Touch Pods are incredibly absorbent.  I trust them when we’re in public and even at nap times!
This diaper is also incredibly trim and I think that is mostly because of the way this One-Size diaper adjusts.  They have a unique Slide2Size system, which uses a toggle (that hides in the front of the diaper) to adjust the leg elastic.  This is the ONLY diaper that I really believe would fit a tiny newborn.  They advertise it to fit 6-35 lbs, and I truly believe it will.
Buy It:  You can buy a Softbums Omni w/ Super Dry Touch Pod from Cute N Fluffy Diapers for only $21.56, with FREE SHIPPING!!!  That’s the cheapest I’ve seen these diapers anywhere!
Win It:  Cute N Fluffy Cloth Diapers has offered the chance for one lucky So Easy Being Green reader a chance to win a Coconut (white) Softbums Omni and Super Dry Touch Pod!

Wordless Wednesday

Playmates.
I promise that this lovely necklace usually does not wind up in a tug of war with these two incredibly cute girls.  It’s usually around my neck, but Soph loves it so much that she sometimes gets her way!
By the way, Happy Birthday to the incredible Artist who made this necklace!!!

Diaper Sprayers (DIY Tutorial)

Tip of the Day:

Extra tough stains? Mix Lemon Juice with Water and spray on your inserts while sunning them…  Eco- & Cloth Diaper-Friendly Bleach-er!  Be sure the inserts are wet when you spray, then sun.  Throw them back in the washer for one last rinse cycle when done (to avoid any reactions on your baby’s bum!).

One of the most dreaded parts of cloth diapering, to newbies at least (it definitely was to me), is the poopy diaper.  At first you worry about the “ick” factor and then it evolves to the “oh, no, my beautiful diapers are stained!” factor.

A diaper sprayer will help both of those concerns.

I’ve read numerous times that if your baby is exclusively breast-fed (EBF) that their poop is water soluble and can be put directly into your washer.  I don’t know about you, but I just didn’t like the sound of that.  So, when I decided to cloth diaper Sophia, I started researching diaper sprayers (even though she was EBF in the beginning).

There are lots of brands, but they all have one thing in common… they are quite price-y!  All the sprayers listed on Kelly’s Closet are all over $40!  In my opinion, they are well worth the money, but… if you are a DIY-er or have a DIY-er as a hubby (like I do!), you can tackle this simple project and be successful!

After some research, I came across this tutorial.  You can make your own DIY Diaper Sprayer!
It is SO easy to understand and I love the pictures of the parts you need to buy.  I even printed them out and it made the shopping trip MUCH easier when we got to Lowe’s.  I bought an over-the-door hook and hung the sprayer on it, to keep it out of the floor.  In all, we spent $26 on our DIY sprayer!!!

We’ve had our diaper sprayer installed now for around 7 months.  It has never leaked and has great pressure.  The only issue I have is it sometimes has TOO much pressure, so I’ve gotten good at how to hold the diaper while spraying.

I truly think that my diaper sprayer is one of the reasons that I’ve never had serious battles with stains during our 7 months of cloth diapering.  It’s definitely one of the reasons that I was never concerned with the yuckiness of poopy diapers.

If you do happen to get stains on your inserts or covers, just put them out in the sun (wet is best) and let the sun bleach them!  You are never supposed to use bleach on your diapers with PUL and besides, letting your diapers shine in the sun is such a prettier sight and smell (than bleach) and much green-er!

Tomorrow is the LAST day of the So Easy Doing Fluffy Laundry Event, but you definitely don’t want to miss it… because you’ll have the chance to win… FLUFF from this great store!

Nellie’s All Natural Detergent Giveaway *closed*

Closed.  Congratulations to Kristina.

Tip of the Day:  If you dry your AIO’s in a dryer, turn them inside out!  This will cut down on their drying time.

As I began looking for cloth diapering safe, natural detergents to feature during this event, a friend urged me to look into Nellie’s All-Natural Laundry Soda.  She remembered seeing it on EcoMom and thought it would be a good fit for the event.  She was right!  I love the fact that Nellie’s is free from the nasty chemicals that so many detergents have and the fact that they tell you exactly what makes up their soda!

As I was searching for information on this laundry soda, I found this jewel of information:
Nellie’s Laundry Soda work’s great as a pre-treatment as well. All you need to do is put 1 tablespoon or 1 nugget in a spray bottle with 16 oz of warm water, let it dissolve, shake up and spray on stained or heavily soiled areas while putting clothes into the washing machine. Wash as normal. This should solve the problems with stains or soiled areas of fabrics.

I had one Softbum insert that was stained and simply would not wash or even sun out.  I mixed a bit of Nellie’s, as suggested, and the stain is finally gone.  It really had been plaguing me for months!

The Nellie’s brand also makes a few other great cleaning products, such as Laundry Nuggets, Dryer Balls (these are PVC-free plastic, not wool), Oxi Brightener (think an all-natural version of Oxy-Clean) and Dishwashing Powder/Nuggets ( I want to try these next!).

Why I Love Nellie’s: I love that I know every ingredient in this laundry soda and, of course, that it’s cloth diaper safe!  Straight from there website… Here is a guideline for washing cloth diapers with Nellie’s:  Washing one regular size load of laundry, approximately 12 diapers, you would use 1 tablespoon or 1 nugget.

Buy It:  You can buy a 50 load bag of Nellie’s All-Natural Laundry Soda on their website for only $9.99!

Win It:  Nellie’s is offering one lucky So Easy Being Green reader a chance to win their own 50 load bag of Nellie’s for free!

Diaper Bag Wrangler Wetbag Giveaway! *closed*

Closed.  Congrats to Olivia Lambert Lasting!

Tip of the Day: With very few exceptions on soft water front loaders… Don’t use a teaspoon of detergent.  Many cases of stink issues can be solved by upping the amount of detergent.  {source

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!  Since it’s such a special day, I’m bringing you a review (and great giveaway) of my new found love of cloth diapering accessories… the cutest wetbag e.v.e.r!

When I started doing my initial cloth diaper research, I had decided that we would use disposables when we were out in public.  I didn’t want to lug around dirty diapers, seriously… gross!?  That was, until I discovered wetbags!  They are a wondrous invention!  They keep the smells in the bag (so all your friends & family don’t hate you for cloth diapering in their cars…) and they make doing the laundry super easy, as you just throw them in the wash with the diapers!

The first wetbag I purchased was from a very popular brand, but to be honest, it was teeny-tiny!  I could barely fit 2 diapers in the bag and there was no handle, so it was always getting lost in the diaper bag.  Enter… The Diaper Bag Wrangler!  I had heard her “name” thrown around quite a bit by Mami on her Facebook page, so I decided to check her out and I am so glad that I did!

I chose the cutest print ever, for our new wetbag, Zoe Owl.  It’s just so cute and so… roomy!  She advertises that they hold 2-3 soiled diapers, but I can definitely squeeze 4 in there!  I have not had any issues of leaking or smelling from this wetbag.  I love, love, love the loop and handle.  I clip it to the outside of my diaper bag (because it is too cute to go inside) or even sometimes straight onto the stroller!

K.C. also makes some other great items like the Link Loop Diaper Bag, which will definitely be my next purchase, as well as the lovely Snap To It Aprons, which I was lucky enough to win from a Facebook giveaway last week!  I will definitely be posting a review/pictures soon!

By the way, the DBW Facebook page has a giveaway up every Wednesday during the month of February, *hint hint*!

Why I Love the DBW Wetbag:  Simple… it’s the perfect size for when we are out and about, which is what a wetbag should be.  The loop makes it easy to hold, find, and access when you’re in a rush and tight quarters while changing a diaper in public!

Buy It:  You can buy your own wetbag from the Diaper Bag Wrangler website for $15.00 and free shipping (all of the time, no coupon code or minimum purchase!)

Win It:  One of the you lucky readers is going to win your choice of a Zippered Wet Bag!
